Theft of Osprey Eggs – Strathspey

Police in Badenoch and Strathspey are appealing for information after thieves raided an Osprey nest in the valley and removed the eggs.

The theft occurred between late April and the end of May, 2009, although it is believed to have been more likely to be in early May.

Police are urging the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity near to Osprey nesting sites.

Inverness Police issue warning to bank account holders not to disclose personal information

NORTHERN Constabulary is warning the public to take care of their personal banking information.

A number of people in the Inverness area have recently been contacted unexpectedly by telephone, and by email trying to induce them to impart personal and banking details.

Under no circumstances should any details be given, as Banks themselves advise they would never contact individuals in this manner.

Constable Malcolm Raeburn, Community Safety Officer at Burnett Road said: “Under no circumstances should you impart personal or banking details to any person asking for it, either by way of telephone or email. If you have any doubt you should independently contact your bank to clarify any query that may have been raised.”

Warning to householders in Inverness as well as wider public of Highlands and Islands – thefts

NORTHERN Constabulary is reminding householders to ensure their doors and windows are locked following a number of recent housebreakings in the Inverness area where laptop computers have been stolen.

Police would extend that advice to all residents in the Highlands and Islands to ensure they do not become the victim of opportunist theft.

Crime Prevention Officer for Inverness PC Malcolm Raeburn said:

“We have had a number of opportunist type thefts in the Inverness area over the past few weeks and we would like to remind householders to bear home security in mind.

“Ground floor windows and doors should be locked when people are out of the house during the day or at night to deter thieves. Expensive items such as laptops and digital cameras should not be on open display or able to be seen through windows

“Don’t give criminals easy access to your property and be vigilant when it comes to home security.

“Crime prevention officers are available to offer advice to residents and we would urge anyone looking for assistance to contact their nearest Police station.”

Bank Fraud – Distraction Theft

About 1445 hours on Tuesday 24th February 2009 two eastern European males entered the Bank of Scotland, High Street, Nairn, whilst a third male remained outside the bank acting as a lookout.

One of the males entered the bank and asked the cashier to exchange a large quantity of notes for smaller denominations. Whilst the cashier counted the notes, the male then distracted/confused the cashier by asking for directions and foreign currency.

During this time the male was able to steal a quantity of the cash from the cashier without her realising and all three males made off.

Fortunately the staff at the bank realised and contacted the Police immediately where descriptions were passed to surrounding forces. A short time later the three males were traced and detained within Grampian Area for attempting another distraction theft.

The three males will be appearing at court from custody in connection with these matters.

There has been several previous distraction thefts in an around Northern Constabulary force area. This matter is again highlighted to make the public aware and for them to be extra vigilant when being asked to exchange large quantities of money or goods.

Prevention of Fuel Thefts

Police in Inverness are reminding local farms, commercial premises and householders who have heating oil on their premises to remain vigilant as winter draws in.
Operating in secluded areas where oil tanks can be easily approached in darkness or under the cover of trees can make the those within the rural communities especially more susceptibleto this form of theft.

Northern Constabulary are asking members of the public to take the following precautions to avoid becoming victims of such a crime:

- Check the level of fuel in your tank regularly so you are sure none has gone missing and you always know how much fuel you have.
- Most tanks can be locked at the inspection cover. Make sure your filler cap is lockable. There are lockable filler caps available that can be retro fitted to oil tanks.
- Fit a gate valve security shroud, this prevents the gate valve on the supply pipe to the house from being used to empty the tank.
- Install security lights that come on when there is movement in the garden.
- Consider having a simple alarm system fitted. An inexpensive infra-red model will alert you if there is an intruder on your property and deter a thief.
- Be vigilant. If there is a tanker lorry or a suspicious vehicle in the area spend a few moments thinking about what they are doing. Listen for the sound of an electric pump coming from the vehicle as this is how thieves siphon fuel from the tank.
- If your tank is in a remote area, consider having it moved to a more visible spot. Do not try to conceal it with a fence or panels. This could be illegal and cause a fire hazard.
- Consider installing security gates at your property. This will make it harder for thieves to gain access and protect the area where your oil tank is kept.
